The class maximum for each course is 25 and students will be registered on a first come, first paid basis. If a class does not have a minimum of 10 students enrolled two weeks before the class starts the class will be cancelled. If a class has extremely low enrollments, it may be cancelled sooner to allow the students enrolled in the course sufficient time to enroll in a different class. If you signed up for a class that is canceled you will be called and given the option to enroll in a different class that has not reached the maximum enrollment of 25. If you cannot make a different class, your money will be refunded.

Guides that are interested in attending these courses must register by calling the college at 262-0381 or 262-0314. Tell the person you want to register for the Kenai River Guide Academy®. Individual guides will be required to give their name, social security number and credit card information. Business owners wishing to register guide employees/subcontractors should see the note below. Guides will need to pay the $206 course fee with credit card over the phone or can mail their check to:

Kenai River Guide Academy®
c/o Kenai Peninsula College
ATTN: John Lagoutaris
156 College Road
Soldotna AK 99669

Seats will not be “held” for anyone without payment. If you cannot pay by credit card over the phone, you are required to send a letter to the above address with a check or money order. The same information that is required by phone is required in the letter. Not until the the letter and payment is received will a seat be reserved. When payment is received, you will receive a confirmation email or phone call from the college.

Waiting Lists
If you call and request a seat in a class that is fully enrolled, you can ask to be placed on a waiting list. You will be placed on this list based upon when you call. If a seat becomes available, those on the list will be called in the order their name was placed on the list. You can state a class preference for when you want to attend, but you will be called anytime there is an opening. If you refuse a seat in a class, you will remain on the list in the same order and could be called if a seat opens up in a future class.

It is possible, that you could be called at 8:30 am on the first day of a class if another guide does not show up. We will call you once to ask if you can get to the class no later than noon that day. If you are unable to do that or if you don’t answer your phone, the vacant seat will be offered to the next person on the waiting list. If you don’t answer your phone, you will have a phone message stating that the Kenai River Guide Academy called to offer you a vacant seat, but we were unable to reach you, but your name will stay active on the waiting list for future potential vacancies. It is suggested that when registering for a class that you provide us with any phone numbers where you might be reached and we will try to reach you at those numbers you provide us.

Show up on time the first day or lose your seat
On the first day of class, all guides are required to be in the classroom by 8 am. If you are not present by 8:30 am, your seat will be offered to those on the waiting list in the order by which they were placed on the list. If you show up after 8:30 am, you will be unable to take the course that week. We will offer to put you in a different class, if there is vacancy, or place you on the waiting list.

Cancellations
If you are unable to make the class you are registered for, contact us immediately. Your seat will be given to a person on the waiting list. You will then need to inform us of the next class you are interested in. If there are no seats in that class, you have a choice of being placed on the waiting list or asking about vacancies in another class. If there are no vacancies in other classes, you will be placed on the waiting list.

Important Registration Note to Business Owners
Reserving Seats Policy

  • Employers may reserve up to two seats per class for guide employees/subcontractors.
  • The maximum number of seats that can be reserved for ALL employers is 12 seats per class. Each class has a maximum enrollment of 25.
  • Employers must provide payment and ADF&G business owner license number to reserve seats. See below for instructions.
  • Employers must provide names of all guides in reserved seats and have their guides officially register through the college two months before start of class.  Businesses failing to provide names or have their guides register with the college by the deadline will have their registration fee refunded and seats will be made available for general registration.
Guides are university students and personally responsible for registering or dropping this class.  If one of your guides cannot attend the class she/he registers for, you may substitute another guide and that guide will need to register per the instructions below. Employers cannot remove a student from a class once a reserved seat is transferred to a registered student.  Contact your guides to confirm their registration status and course completion.
The Federal Family Education and Privacy Act regulations prohibit releasing student information without a signed release of information by the student.  In other words, if you want to know if your guide registered for the course or completed the course, you will need to contact the guide since federal law prohibits the college from releasing this information to you unless the guide signs a release of information form stating that KPC can release such information to you.

Business Owners—How to Reserve Seats

  1. Email a request to reserve seats to injal2@uaa.alaska.edu.  Please include the number of seats (maximum of two per class) you want to reserve, ADF&G business owner license number, and business phone number.  Upon receiving this email, you will be called back and asked to provide a credit card number to reserve your seats. Seats will not be reserved until payment is received.

  2. Email the names of all guides in reserved seats, at least two months before the start of class you have reserved seats in.  Check website for deadlines.

  3. Tell your guides to register for the class, at least two months before start of class.  You cannot register the guides in this class; it is the responsibility of each guide to register. Registration forms are available online here. Guides can mail, fax or deliver these forms to KPC.
